Goals and Learning Objectives

COURSE GOALS

  • Examine what the Gospels really teach about Jesus’ birth and its meaning, implications, and challenges for the world today.
  • Introduce the Wisdom Jesus’s vision and teachings and their power to transform heart and mind- a new perspective on Christ’s presence and message.
  • Read the parables as subversive messages for Christians today that foster truth, forgiveness, reconciliation, justice and compassion.
  • Expand perspective on Jesus message of the kingdom of God, his final week in Jerusalem and the implications for contemporary believers

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Know what the Gospels teach about the birth of Jesus and understand the impact it could have on religious celebrations.
  • Describe Jesus as a Wisdom Teacher of spiritual transformation, a path to being present to one’s life in love and walking the path of Jesus
  • Understand the parables of Jesus are subversive teachings and ways they can stimulate alternative views in living authentically in our challenging times. 
  • Compare and contrast Borg’s and Crossan’s understanding of
  • Jesus’ s Passion and death as a reflection of God’s passion for compassion, justice and nonviolence with Christianity’s traditional teaching that Jesus died to save humans from sin
