Week 1 Assignment: Self-Revelation with Sarah

Approach this assignment as if you are an archaeologist on a dig, brushing away layers of earth to discover a precious artifact that has been buried for too long.

The site of this "dig": The words of the story from Genesis, below, about how Isaac came to be born.

The precious artifact that you are unearthing: A song of powerful joy and self-revelation sung by Sarah.

The dirt that you need to cast off: any words of patriarchy that were imposed upon her story in the version as it was written in Genesis.

STEPS TO THE ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Go through these verses and remove anything that has to do with Abraham.
  2. Bring the remaining verses together so that they tell a story in which Sarah, God, and Sarah’s baby are the only characters. Feel free to add or change a few things so that the short story flows. As with shards from ancient vase that need to be glued back together, you might have to reconstruct a few missing pieces.
  3. After reading the various songs that appear in the Bible (Miriam’s, Deborah’s, Hannah’s, Mary’s), imagine, write down (and embody?) Sarah’s song. Let it be your own! One thing for each of us to include: this refrain from Sarah’s words in Gen 21:6. God made my laugh, made me to laugh And you who hear my laugh, laugh with me!
  4. Share your version of the story! Share your song! (Use the "Comments" section below.)

GENESIS 18….9 They said to him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” 10 Then one said, “I will surely return to you in the time of life, and there will be a child to Sarah, your wife.” And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; the ways of women had ceased to be for Sarah. 12 So Sarah laughed [ titzachak ] within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh [ tzachakah ] and say, ‘Hmph! Come on! I give birth? Me? I’m old!’ 14 Is anything too wonderful for G-d? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh, [ tzachakti ]” for she was afraid. He said, “Yes, you did laugh [ tzachakt ].”

….GENESIS 21 1 G-d dealt with Sarah as he had said, and G-d did for Sarah as promised. 2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac [ yitzchak ] 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac [yitzchak] when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac [yitzchak] was born to him. 6 Now Sarah said, “God made laughter [tzachak] for me; everyone who hears it will laugh [ yitzchak ] with me.” 7 And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
